The Tulane Women’s Basketball program will usher in a new era with newly hired head coach Ashley Langford. The Tulane’s Athletics Hall of Famer (2018) and former Green Wave’s star point guard will leave Stony Brook to take over for the retiring Lisa Stockton, who spent 30 years at the school. Ashley Langford has made history by becoming the first black female to be hired as the head basketball coach of Tulane’s women’s team.
Hiring Langford gives a somewhat seamless transition from the Stockton era when she earned 591 Division I victories and 654 wins overall. Stockton coached Langford and probably gave her stamp of approval on the hire.
She had formidable competition for the role as the Green Wave also interviewed Jackson State’s head women’s basketball coach Tomekia Reed. However, the school is giving Langford the opportunity to return back to the campus, restore the program, and navigate through the new challenges in recruiting and NILs.
Langford, 37, is 66-22 (75%) as a head basketball coach with the Seawolves program. During her first season, the team had a 23-6 record before playing in the 2022 WNIT but lost in the first round.
The school left the America East to join the CAA conference for 2022-23. Last season, Langford’s team posted a 25-3 (16-2 CAA) record and was crowned the conference’s regular-season champions.
Stony Brook signed Ashley Langford to a contract extension through 2028.
